Coral Community Guidelines

The Coral Project community is where we talk about online communities, comment sections, and journalism. We aim to create a safe and sustainable environment for discussion. You can read about this in more detail in our Code of Conduct.

Our basic guidelines are:

  • Be supportive of each other
  • Criticize ideas, not people
  • Flag bad behavior
  • Follow the rules

Be supportive of each other

The topics discussed here matter to us, and if you want to participate in one of them, please be considerate. What we mean by this:

  • Collaborate
  • Be generous in giving and accepting criticism
  • Respect people’s boundaries
  • Be kind
  • Don’t make it personal

Criticize ideas, not people

People here won’t always agree with each other. That’s fine, but please keep the conversation about ideas, not the people who express them.

We expect you to avoid anti-social actions including:

  • Insults
  • Threats
  • Slurs
  • Pornography
  • Spam
  • Bullying
  • Copyright infringement
  • Impersonation of someone else
  • Violating someone’s privacy

Flag bad behavior

When you see bad behavior, please don’t respond to it in public. Bad behavior can be encouraged by acknowledging it, consuming your energy, and wasting everyone’s time. Just flag it. We’ll take notice, and where appropriate, take action.

Moderators reserve the right to remove any content and any user account for any reason at any time. Currently posts are pre moderated as we grow and change. Moderators will be active Mon-Fri, 9am-7pm EST.

Moderators have special authority because they are responsible for this forum. But so are you. With your help, moderators are community facilitators, not janitors or police. They are held to the same standards of behavior outlined in our Code of Conduct.

If you need to contact someone urgently about something happening in the community, email coralcommunity@mozillafoundation.org

Follow the rules

Make the effort to put things in the right place, so that we can spend more time discussing and less time cleaning up. That means:

  • Don’t start a topic in the wrong category
  • Don’t cross-post the same thing in multiple topics
  • Don’t post no-content replies such as “I agree!” or “+1!” – just use the Like button
  • Don’t divert a topic by changing it midstream – use the Reply as a Linked Topic option
  • Don’t sign your posts — every post has your profile information attached to it

If a moderator moves or alters your content, they will let you know.

Please do give us feedback in the Forum if you think the system is incorrect or could be done better.

Help us make this better

This site is operated by the Coral Project and you, the community. If you have any further questions or ideas about how things should work here, open a new topic in the Site Feedback category and we’ll discuss it with you. If there’s a critical or urgent issue that can’t be handled by a meta topic or flag, contact us at coralcommunity@mozillafoundation.org
